August - Hazuki 2025
The Gozan no Okuribi is a cherished summer tradition in Kyoto. On this night, immense bonfires are lit on the mountains surrounding the city, creating Kanji and symbols that glow against the night sky. This tradition is believed to send off the ancestral spirits who have returned to their families during summer, gently guiding them back to the spirit world.
It is said that keeping the remaining charcoal from these sacred fires in the home serves as a powerful talisman, offering protection from misfortune, evil, and even theft. Though the days are still warm and humid, gentle breezes of morning and evening carry the first subtle signs of autumn.
